Hello Everyone,

One of the horrors of my childhood was kicking over a dead Pack Rat in the desert and finding large brown pill like larvae pulsating on the rotting flesh. It wasn’t until I was older that my curiosity got the better of me and I finally found out what it was. The larvae was in fact the young beginnings of Bot Flies.

Bot Flies:

Bot Flies are, in more ways or less, similar to the common house fly. They have the same features, six legs, buzzing wings, and their eyes that are actually hundreds of eyes. One main difference is how the young begin their cycle of life.

The young begin as eggs that once hatched, detached and follow the warmth of their host, usually a mammal. One they find the warmth they make their way into the skin through any opening possible, often the pores. From then Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

Happy Valentine’s Day, or should I say Lupercalia or bird watching day. Don’t worry, I’ll explain myself in a minute. Although Valentine’s Day has never been a very popular holiday with me it is very important to many. I happily embrace the love that people share together and am in no way against this but it has just never appealed to me as the essence of a holiday. Regardless I will keep others in mind while laying down the creepy, dark, and eerie side of this romantic holiday for those in love.

Valentine’s Day:

Many of us know the story of Valentine’s Day being named for the Saint Valentine who was martyred. Although there are several Saints with the name Valentine that this holiday is believed to be named after the one that is most commonly associated with the holiday is the one who performed the secret marriages Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

Many of us know about Jack Frost. The folklore behind the winter-being most likely comes from older Norse beliefs. However, he is more commonly believed to derive from the winter-being Old Man Winter. Regardless of where he came from one thing is certain. Jack Frost has been part of our upbringing for many years now.

Modern Jack Frost:

Modern day depictions create him to be one of two things. Either a wispy, chilly, obnoxious character with an excitable outlook on life or a coldblooded killer.

Yes, in case some of you are not aware, Jack Frost is also in horror movies that exist today. And he has also starred in kid’s cartoons and Pixar style films. Or regular films as a lovely little snowman.

Beliefs:

It is believed in all the tales, (books, films, etc.) that Jack Frost comes with the winter weather. Or that he creates winter. Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

Well the season is in the air. Or at least in some parts of the world. It hasn’t been very cold where I’m at. But then again it hardly ever does. Still I am reflecting on things that happen this time of year, or subjects that are relevant. So this blog will be about Krampus. Christmas’s darker side.

Krampus in History:

Krampus typically out-dates Christianity in certain Alpine traditions. This is only the description of a matching the character. But the creature we know as Krampus today was incorporated into the Christmas traditions sometime in the 17th Century.

This is when Krampus became known as one of the Companions of Saint Nicholas and originated in the regions around Bavaria, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary and other countries in that general region.

Appearance:

Krampus has many forms throughout history but many of them all agree that he shares the features Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

Not too long ago I was on the topic of sandstorms or Haboobs with a few blog posts but also in conversation. Given the area that I live in these are more common than that of a blizzard. Mainly because I have never seen one here. The closest I got to see a blizzard was when I was visiting the nearby mountain ranges for work several years back. It was a different and eerily experience.

What Defines a Blizzard?

The weather phenomenon can be described as a snowstorm with high winds and low visibility. Of course where I live a regular snowstorm may seem like a blizzard to me because of the lack of snow my area receives every year.

What Many People Think Of?

Most people who are not accustomed to blizzards think automatically to The Donner Party, or movies like The Shining when they think blizzard. Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

First off I want to point out that “Rat King” is not a character from a cartoon many of us watched when we were younger. It is in fact a phenomenon that occurs with real rats when they are seeking warmth. I call it a phenomenon because of the resulting end of the manifestation, so to speak.

What is Rat King?

Well the translation from ancient times is how the part about the “king” comes into play and the “rat” part is kind of obvious. It is rats.

The phenomenon, Rat King, is when several to many rats or other small rodents get together, maybe for heat or comfort, and die in that formation. This can be caused my sticky substances that trap them or perhaps the exposure to the elements themselves.

When the rats die and the carcasses mummify they form a cluster of dead rats, they Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

Omens and Foretelling are like peas and a pod. First off, the definition of an omen is pretty much and event regarded as a portent of good or evil. Some type of psychic vision into the future. Foretelling is just one in the same.

Foretelling is pretty much defined as the ability to predict the future or to predict the future. It does not have to be a consistent thing and can be one individual moment. Just had to clarify that, because I try hard not to confuse anyone as much as possible in my odd style of writing.

Although we hear about them a lot together they are in fact different. An omen is pretty much foretelling is something good or bad is going to happen. They are usually not very distinct in what they mean. Foretelling on the other hand is usually the actually seeing or Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

Well, I try to stay put on a certain criteria for my blogs from one month to the other but something came up that I wanted to elaborate on. A hawk’s cry.

Why?

I was walking outside and doing some work when I stumbled across a rock in the desert. For those of you who do not know much about where I live, I live on a large acreage of land in southeastern Arizona. It is desert but lush and full of life at the same time.

But back to the story the rock is no ordinary rock. It is a rock that is not normally found around these parts because it was something that we brought in years ago for decoration. The interesting thing about the rock was its placement. It is placed outside of our general yard area and sits alone among the many brownish and Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

Eaten alive. Cannibalism. Being eaten after you have already been disposed of. These are some things that really hit a different nerve with people when you talk about it. Why? Well, for me it is the feeling that your body is being consumed by something other than the Earth. Maybe it’s because we have climbed to the top of the food chain and are not used to this so the very thought repels us. Perhaps it is the primal fear because this was humans most known threat of death in the beginning of human kind besides the accidental, being eaten by animals.

Cannibalism:

When many people think cannibals they immediately think of Hannibal Lecter or Native Tribes of the Jungle regions where cannibalism was a large part of the Hollywood pictures for some time. In fact it dates back before any of these known Native Tribes of the Continue reading

Hello Everyone,

Okay I kind of made a joke in that title a little bit to make it a little catchier but hey it sounded funny for something eerie.

As many of you who know me will also know that this is just a play on words because I have been bitten or stung by just about everything in the desert minus one Rattlesnake and one Gila Monster. And also I should specify that I mean things with venom or a type of poisonous fluid.

What’s eerie about it?

Okay for me the first thing is the animal doing it. For some reason the fact of something crawling on me and biting or stinging me freaks me out. Now the flip side to that is that I will voluntarily hold these animals or creatures but when they are uninvited it gets me.

Then onto the venom or poison part. What Continue reading
