Hello Everyone,
Omens and Foretelling are like peas and a pod. First off, the definition of an omen is pretty much and event regarded as a portent of good or evil. Some type of psychic vision into the future. Foretelling is just one in the same.
Foretelling is pretty much defined as the ability to predict the future or to predict the future. It does not have to be a consistent thing and can be one individual moment. Just had to clarify that, because I try hard not to confuse anyone as much as possible in my odd style of writing.
Although we hear about them a lot together they are in fact different. An omen is pretty much foretelling is something good or bad is going to happen. They are usually not very distinct in what they mean. Foretelling on the other hand is usually the actually seeing or knowing of particular events that will happen in the future.
Why am I talking about Omens and Foretelling?
Something happened a little while back that made me think of the beliefs, superstitions, and history behind omens and foretelling.
For those who follow me on Facebook you might already kind of know the story. I woke up late to some Javelinas ransacking my yard. I went outside and chased them off. There was a crisp, misty rain in the air. So thin it felt like I was in the clouds or a large home humidifier.
As the little pig-like creatures scurried away from the yelling and rants of the almost fearless Josh, I stopped in the middle of my driveway. I noticed the moisture in the air. I looked up at a sky full of clouds reflecting the city lights far, far off in the distance back down to Earth.
Then bright flashes of light caught my eyes to the North. Like little flickering flames of light that just yearned for me to look their way. I did and noticed the spectacular display of lightning upon the mountains in the distance. Then as if they were sending down silent streams or whistles that I could hear somehow, and drawing my attention in the complete opposite direction I saw falling stars.
Although the whistling of falling rockets was only in my head as I gazed upon their evaporating trails held within the confines of the pitch black sky in that direction they seemed to light up a path. Several more followed in the next minute or so. Then when I was in a place of peace out there among the wild animals in the desert by my house, at 2am, I thought “kind of feels like an omen.”
The Story and the Blog:
So that was my story of why I am talking about Omens and Foretelling. Still what about them? I don’t know. Perhaps it was just the eerie feeling I had outside then, although I was at peace it didn’t feel normal. Maybe I am just not used to being at peace. All this go-go-go all the time and people like myself forget the little things that are really the big things in life.
I also started thinking about a movie I use to watch a lot. It is the “King Arthur” movie that came out several years back. At one point in the movie when they feel that a battle is imminent one of the characters notices it’s raining and snowing at the same time. He says, “It’s a bad omen.”
So you know something had to happen poorly when the weather was that way for them to recognize it as a bad omen. That is generally the idea of the omens. Sometimes people feel that they can foretell a little more when omens occur. Usually the more simple things like; it will be a good day at the wedding, or, they were born in this weather and this will make them a powerful warrior after much suffering. Still, never really that specific. At least not off the top of my head.
Thoughts:
Well I already shared a lot of mine on this but as always it’s always fun to hear what others have to say.
